Family Traditions

by Fred Bergeron, DTM

In May of 1979, “Family Tradition” was released by Hank Williams Jr. Did you have any family traditions during the holidays? I was 12 ½ years old when this song came out, but when I turned thirteen in October of that year, once December rolled around, our family tradition started with looking at Christmas lights. From neighborhood walks in Hawaii to Callaway Gardens in Georgia, being enamored with this tradition carried on through my adult years. Even after my parents divorced, my mother would take my brother and me to look at the Christmas lights. And the year before my mom passed in 2019, we went to the Daytona International Speedway to look at the Christmas lights in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

I remember when I used to live in Georgia, there was a homeowner who would start putting up lights around Halloween, and by the time Christmas rolled around, he would have cars lined up, often causing traffic jams and occasional fender benders, for people to be in awe of his totally lit-up property. He probably could have charged money for people to drool over his lights, and I’m sure those onlookers would not have minded one bit. Rumor had it that he would add one additional holiday item each year.

Whether it’s the holidays or not, spending quality time with your family is important and is a key factor in establishing family values and bonding.

“Traditions can provide families with a sense of identity and belonging. They can inspire positive feelings and memories that family members can share. Family traditions also provide a sense of continuity across generations. They are a way of transferring the family’s values, history, and culture from one generation to the next,” states Very Well Family @ www.VeryWellFamily.com.

So, whether it’s enjoying smores over an open fire, caroling, or watching the Christmas lights, family traditions are experiences or activities that are passed down between generations. These traditions can be as unique and special as the family itself.
