A Tale of Two Districts

by Fred Bergeron, DTM

It was May 2021. As I was approaching the end of my Public Relations term with District 84, I accidentally stumbled across a chartering club that was meeting in District 7 called PR Masters.

After I was politely informed by one of the chartering members that PR Masters was having a planning meeting to charter the club, I asked her if I could still attend and potentially become a chartering member. When the meeting was over, she messaged me privately, asking what it was like chartering a club I had just stumbled across, as well as commending me on staying for the duration of the meeting. When I told her that Toastmasters were one big happy family, she invited me back for the final stages of the planning meeting.

On June 10, 2021, Club #07898167, District 7, Area H92, was chartered, becoming Select Distinguished in its first year of existence.

For the 2021-22 year, I decided to take a break from district leadership, but towards the end of that Toastmasters year, the incoming District 7 Director, Lorri Andersen, DTM, asked me to be the Area 92 Director for 2022-23. As an Area Director for the second time in my Toastmasters journey, my new Area just missed Distinguished by one club.

District 7 was then looking for a successor to the outgoing 2022-23 Public Relations Manager. After putting my name in the hat, I was selected as the 2023-24 District 7 Public Relations Manager.

After discovering I was a previous Public Relations Manager with District 84 and was no rookie in the role, I was kept extremely busy with my everyday task of promoting Toastmasters. Just like with District 84, I implemented podcasting while hosting a bi-weekly forum. I also created ads for clubs that won the club website contest the previous year.

Shortly after completing the ads, I promoted the District 7 conference, which happened to be on the same Saturday (May 18) as District 84’s conference. Since I had already committed myself to attending the District 84 conference in person, I was literally attending two conferences at once.

On Friday, May 17, right at the beginning of the District 84 costume contest, I had to leave to attend the District 7 Council meeting, where they voted for the new leaders for District 7.

I’m proud to say that I was voted as the next Club Growth Director for District 7, making me the first virtual Trio member of District 7.

Don’t worry, District 84, I’m not moving away, just moving up in leadership! 😊
